In many cities these days, if you talk about ‘material’, people might assume you are talking about something written – perhaps a play or a script – something intangible. But matter; substance; stuff; it makes up everything. This utter ubiquity means, perversely, that we tend not to think about the role of materials in our lives. The fundamental impact of new materials technologies tends to get overlooked. What material comes to mind when you read “tyres”? You almost certainly answered “rubber”. For “glass” you might think “sand”. But if you read “computer”, do you think of materials at all?
